Description

• Introduction. Multimedia characteristics, applications and systems.
• Data coding. Sampling, quantization, coding. Information theory elements. Lossless and lossy coding. Entropy coding, dictionary coding, RLE coding, source coding, transform coding
• Image. Types and characteristics. Image representation, image file formats, color models, image compression techniques, JPEG standard.
• Video. Characteristics, color subsampling, YCbCr. Video coding techniques, H.26x, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MPEG-7, MPEG-21.
• Sound. Characteristics, sound representation, sound compression, MPEG Audio Layers I, II, III (MP3).
• Animation principles, 2D/3D animation. Topics on synchronization, storage, synthesis, search and retrieval of multimedia content. Multimedia authoring tools.
• Multimedia streaming, multimedia transmission protocols, RTP (Realtime Transport Protocol), RTCP (Realtime Control Transport Protocol), RTSP (Realtime Transport Streaming Protocol).
